1. Nothing really surprised me, to be honest. Everything that we learned today was expected and very enjoyable. I learned much, but nothing that caught me by surprise. At least, for now.
2. The "friendships" between the staff and the major amount of puns used everywhere. These characteristics feel important to me because they are not usually found in scholarly programs.
I was surprised today by the amount of time spent helping students learn and not all notes and lectures. I was behind by a day and the students helped me catch up and understand everything. The helpers cooperate with you and are always there. Helping everyone understand seems to be the most important value. The staff made sure everyone was caught up and not struggling.
1. I was surprised that we were already learning to make simple animations. 2. It seems like the teachers/TA's/stewards are all very willing to help students solve problems and advance their ideas . I've noticed that when I finish one task, the TA will often give me new challenging task to complete, which shows how the staff seems to value the ability to challenge one's self and explore/discover new things. Overall, SHIP seems to value individuals supporting each other in order to grow.
Some values that seem important in SHIP are problem solving and teamwork: problem solving because that's 90% of programming from what I've seen/heard, and teamwork because the instructors encourage others to work together.
1.Something that surprised me was that so many ship puns and references could be made. 2.Some values that seem to be important to me would be good memory and Creativity. Because in order to make cool things you need to remember how to make them in the first place. Also if you want to create something it can't be boring or extremely simple all the time, you want to be able to think up cool things to make.
I was sort of surprised by the fact that coding and graphic design are very inter-related, it made me realize just how similar the fields are. I was also surprised that I was able to somewhat recreate the pacman game successfully. In my opinion, it seems that it is important to always have an open mind and be able to encourage and support each other when we are working on our individual projects. Also, it seems important that we all work together to get something done and that we work as a team and not as individuals.
1. The pace got faster haha. While I may not know the concept of global and local variables completely when it comes to the face function and posX, it's manageable. 2. Teamwork? Social activity and frivolity
1. As we delve more into the curriculum, I realize that as of yet programming isn't as intimidating as it is stereotyped to be. 2. Communication, teamwork, making and learning from mistakes, are some of the values that seem to be important in SHIP
I wasn't surprised by much that happened today, but there was something interesting that surprised me yesterday, which was the first day. I didn't realize that there was a version of a programming language that simplified making shapes! I've used other variants of programming that had aspects of drawing shapes, but they all seemed to overcomplicate things. But with Processing, the commands for shapes appear very simple and easy to understand.
I see teamwork as a very important value in SHIP. Many of the activities in SHIP involve people working together to solve a problem, and that is an important aspect to learn in the world. It is also very crucial to work hard on our activities, as the instructors always encourage us to make and try new things. I also believe resilience is an important value because it is vital to continue to work on a problem, no matter what challenges we face along the way.
I was surprised by the number of things we learned today such as learning how to move images, which was pretty cool. Before I came into to this program I thought that I was going to be out of place since I knew nothing about computer programming or coding, but in the last 2 days I have already learned so many new things with help from the staff. Based on this I guess values that may be important to SHIP are being comfortable and helpfulness. Today was a pretty good day.
I wasn't really surprised by anything that we learned today because I have had some experience with animating figures before, I just had to get used to the different program of processing. A value that is very important in SHIP is communication because when there is something that I don't understand I can ask a shipmate or TA for help.
1) I made a horrifying abomination of a smiley face, and a LSD trip out of a logo. Naturally, I found both of those things rather surprising, leaning more so the "terrified" side of surprised.
2)I haven't really noticed any particular values here yet, other than "COMPOOTER ES GUD AND U CODE THINGS THAT R KOOL!" That's pretty normal, considering this is a computer science program.
1.) I wasn't particularly surprised, but I didn't expect that random sentence generators (albeit crude ones) could be so simple to make. 2.) A good realistic viewpoint, for instance, the fact that c-stuy focuses on "real code" and things applicable to the real world, which is important, especially for those that might want to go into the computer science field.
Today, I was surprised at the concept that was thought which enabled us to make animations similar to those seen in cartoons. Sam, the navigator, made us look at the labels on the laptops to find a connection between all the computers, which was interesting. Another surprising thing for today however, happened when Mike Zamansky came into the classroom and ended up singing a song about a Princess Ship or something which was hilarious. At SHIP, the most important values seem to fall somewhere in the bracket of togetherness and close friendship. This appears to be true mainly because everyone at SHIP concentrate their work in teams, including when they helped students that needed help with something. Also, instructors and TAs usually make jokes with each other on a regular basis just to keep each other lively.
1) I don't know if anything surprised me... but hey I learned more coding skillz 2) Teamwork, as you're always going to be working with people. If you can't learn to work with others, you're in the wrong place!
1. Nothing really surprised me today. 2. Friendships and coding(obviously) seem to be really important in SHIP. Many people are able to work efficiently together because they are friends and help each other learn in the process.
1. I was surprised at the length that some of the code we wrote. I would write 10 lines while others can do the same task in 4 lines. Also was surprised by how many functions the for loop could do.
2. The most important value seems to be the ability to try. Even if you aren't able to do something perfectly, as long as you try, you can succeed in anything that you do.
I was surprised at how patient and willing people were to help me out. I feel like it is important in the SHIP program to make sure nobody is left behind.
1) there are a lot of things I learned in class during the school year that apply to processing as well. I was also surprised at how involved I was going to get in the little introductory project, I'm actually having a lot of fun with it. And processing itself allows cooler stuff than netlogo and such, which is nice.
2) prior knowledge really doesn't matter. even though I have a small amount of experience, I'm not in competition with the people around me, so whatever. No one is being judged on their work and in fact it was made clear at the beginning of class that there is no need to compare yourself to those around you. Which is also really nice and makes it much easier to work well

Today was amazing, the fact that you can make things move is just crazy :D.In my opinion some important values in Ship are Team Work and Dedication.

I was surprised at how tasty my sandwich was.

nothing really suprised me today.

Lunches surprised me
ReplyDeleteItems were missing from bags
I spilled Ethan's coke
I was suprised by how hard it is to make a shape move, let alone keeping the shape where you can see it
ReplyDeleteI think teamwork is important here

1. Not really surprised by anything today
ReplyDelete2. Emphasis on understanding the tools that we use will (hopefully) help me to write more efficient code
