  2. My SHIP journey has been very educational and taught me a lot about programming and teamwork. It was fun and the instructors were helpful. I got to work with a lot of different people and create many different projects. Obviously the biggest one was our final project, which I feel could have been better, but I didn't really give it much effort because it was the project I wanted to work on the least. Overall, however, I enjoyed myself, even during my final project.

  3. SHIP not only makes my summer more enjoyable, but more productive. And that's quite rare to come by, since they both don't go together well especially school. Now, I'm less afraid of coding and it makes me wanting to continue further. I get to meet people, work with them, teach and learn from my peers. In the end, you get to make something by applying your knowledge like a game. Well half-summer spent. It's worth it.

  7. My journey here was interesting and productive because i was able to learn a lot of new things using processing and i have learned that working with other people is beneficial because work gets done faster and there are more ideas that can be put forward. I was able to create a game from both teaching and learning code with lots of assistance which was fun.

  8. The journey was amazing since i learned a lot and met new people. I am now able to program cool stuff thanks to this program. The TA's and tecahers were all very helpful and helped and taught a lot. With what i have learned i am excited to creat more stuff and pursue cs.

  9. SHIP is an enriching educational experience. Through it, I acquired basic programming experience I did not posses initially. Most of it is due to the environment: the helpful TA's and instructors, peer tutoring, etc.

  11. It's a really great program to teach people how to program. It's not really for advanced programmers, though it's really fun. You can meet like-minded people, as well. The TA's are really nice to have around, and are good for guidance. Overall, it's great for people who want to program as a beginner or intermediate.

  12. The program taught me many things about programming that I never thought that I would need to know. But these things are very necessary to many kinds of CS, which is quite surprising.

The way I thought of CS jobs was expanded, with the talks teaching me all these ways that programming can be used in a job. However, I have also never been as frustrated with things as I have been while coding, such as code that doesn't work for apparently no reason whatsoever. That was four sentences.

  14. i think that this experience has been amazing for me. But even though i have had a fun time here, i have also had hard times understanding things.
i am just happy that i walked out with more friends than i did when i walked in.

  15. My SHIP journey has been very useful and productive. I went from knowing absolutely nothing about programming, to being able to create a working simulator. I have learned the value of pair programming/ programming in groups for quickly fixing errors and coming up with cool new ideas. I feel that I have gained the confidence to continue programming, and continue to teach myself different methods. My ability to be extremely specific and solve small errors quickly has improved tremendously. The SHIP program was an excellent place to learn some programming and to creatively use my new programming knowledge.

  16. The journey started in shallow waters, going over the basics of operating the grand ship that is programming. Then, we ventured into deeper waters and relied on the TAs to haul us back to shore as we drowned. Next, we gathered our crews and our boat for the final voyage. Now we have set sail along the coast. Finally, we are returning, victorious, into port.

  17. I enjoyed my SHIP experience this year. I participated in the program last year in the beginner room and this year was a great addition to the programming I learned last year. I learned a lot of python, html, and css (all of which I had never used before). It was not as much 'fun' as last year because processing was a really cool language but this year the languages I learned are a lot more useful. I also have a friend that I was telling about the program who said he might be interested in attending next summer. Hauppauge will live on at SHIP!

  18. The journey was very interesting, not only did I learn but I also got invaluable experience and exposure to the world of programming and tech business. It was hard at times, but we didn't just learn to code, we learned how to design, how to think about the end user, how to make sure that our code would work on as many browsers as possible, how to outline our ideas on paper, skills that go past simply programming knowledge. We worked with groups and teamwork was a crucial component, bouncing ideas off of other team-members and painstakingly hunting down a bug only to find a missing comma. Overall it was a great learning experience and gave me a realistic window into the programming world.

  19. My journey in SHIP was long , but very interesting. Over the four weeks at this program, I learned about API's, modules in python, and interacting with API's. Even though I learned new things, I also got to review previous languages I knew like Python, HTML, and CSS. Everything I learned, in general, helped me make my final project with my partner. For me, SHIP was a great summer experience .

  20. I would describe my journey as not only educational but surprising. Originally I thought computer science was boring. But after this experience I've learned that it is actually semi-fun. But I also learned that it could be used for better things that could impact the community through the last talk we had.

  21. The journey has been great. I have learned so many things over the past few weeks. The knowledge that I have retained over the past few weeks about programing is really amazing. This program gave me the experience I need for future coding projects. I'm so glad I was able to part take in this experience over the summer and hopefully I will embark on this journey next year.

  22. These past few weeks I have learned a lot. During the first week I focused on learning the vocabulary that came with computer science. During the second week, I began using those skills to practice creating things on processing. By the third and fourth weeks, I was able to use what I had leanred to make something of my own. Throughout the program, I leaned to problem solve on my own as well as with others.

  23. I have learned a lot here at SHIP. While the first week and 1/2 taught me nothing new, I learned a lot afterwards. I learned how to code HTML and CSS, and how to use the Python module Flask. Overall, it was really fun. This last sentence is filler because 5 sentences on this is impossible.

  25. My journey was swell
full of learning and of fun
    Python is real cool

I had a great time at CSTUY SHIP 2015; it was great to expand upon the skills and knowledge I got last year, and it was great to meet friends from last year, as well as making new ones. I had had some trouble with python during the Saturday program, so it was nice to start really understanding python. I am really proud of our finished product, and I am glad I got the opportunity to come here again. I will keep in touch with the friends I have made this year, and I am glad I got the chance to further my programming education. CSTUY has made programming possible for me.

  26. SHIP has been a really fun and engaging experience. I have been introduced not only to many different scripting languages but have become more experienced in Python. Making a website using the Flask apparatus was really fun. These four weeks have been worthwhile, and getting to meet actual people who have worked and contributed to this field completed the package. I would recommend this program to anyone who has basic understanding or has been introduced to CS and would like learn more.

  27. I feel like the program was interesting. I really enjoyed being here and learning the fundamentals of processing. I wish that the program could be longer so I can learn more from you guys. I meet some new friends and even reunited with old ones. I liked being here and would like to be back next summer.

  28. Ship was great. We weren't there only to learn programming. We were also there to have fun. The TAs helped us a lot, but we were expected to actually learn from the help we received. Sometimes our projects were reeeeeeally frustrating, but mostly I enjoyed this experience.

  29. As SHIP is coming to a close think back on your 4 weeks here. How would you describe your journey to an outsider?

before i came to ship i only knew the theory and how computers worked. in the first week i learned the basics of Java. in the second week i learned how to make an actual game. in the third and fourth weeks i learned how to make a full game. that was created and thought of by me and my team mates.

  30. My adventure in Saint Joseph's College's SHIP program was a satisfying experience. I've met some wholesome individuals along the way and have learned a new language. I would definitely recommend SHIP for anyone who wants to extend their basic understanding of programming languages.

I would like to apologize to Adam, Nolan, Roz, and Chloe for my ambivalence to the project after we found that the original idea was too ambitious. A lot of creative juices were flowing in my mind at the time. While it might not be as intricate as the original, I still managed to have a ton of fun on the project.

  31. My journey was good for the most part. In the beginning I came in thinking that it would be similar to JavaScript. Ha, no. Completely different. To an outsider I would say that if they wanted to join then they should do so.

  32. I've really enjoyed my time here at CTUY. I knew nothing coming in, but now I'm proud with what I've learned these past four weeks. I'm also proud of everyone I've worked with, especially my group for the final project. Our project is pretty cool. This was a summer well-spent. Thank you, CSTUY!

  33. Before SHIP, I had barely dipped a toe into the cs community at my school alone. I've now met a (rather sizable) group of people my own age and younger that are interested in this field. Having continued to practice and learn a new language outside of school, I am much more confident in my abilities and would feel much better about doing any other projects outside of SHIP or school. AND to top it off, I created a project outside the bounds of what I had previously believed was possible for someone of my skill level. Overall, A+ experience. But sorely missing live thluffy mascot. Jus' sayin.

  34. ive learned a lot about coding at cstuy. My experience was pretty good.most of the time we are taught something new then we use that knowledge to create something.we were given a lot of flexibility in terms of projects.that's pretty much it

  35. At SHIP, students learn the basics of programming and apply it to computer graphics. But we also go beyond just the basics and learn about different techniques commonly used in programming. As a previously experienced programmer, I can say that I actually learned many new techniques to use in my projects. Throughout the first two of four weeks, students learn programming and make many practice projects based on assignments. In the last two weeks, the students work in groups to make a final project, which provides a good challenge of their skills. In fact, I am particularly proud of the population simulator that my group made during this session. There are also lunch breaks each day, which allows people to socialize and make friends. Overall, I am happy with my SHIP experience.

  36. I went from hardly knowing anything about code to becoming a master of the novice code level. Now it is my duty to learn apprentice, adept, expert, and finally master coding levels to become a master of the masters. I am especially glad that I have learned much from this program, because maybe now I will not die in my robotics class as much next year. The robotics class is a post AP Java course, but I got in because I'm in the robotics team. If I hadn't come here, I would be fainting at home and struggling to learn anything. I've tried self-teaching. Many times in the past. Didn't work. I also made a lot of friends, none of which I want to smack1!11! This program is the origin of true friendship!

  37. My journey through CSTUY was filled with learning and enjoyment. I especially liked the cooperation that teachers had with their students. TAs especially gave so much more help than they were given credit for. My outlook on Python has widened drastically with the knowledge of API and flask. Thank you so much for giving me such an opportunity to be in CSTUY.

  38. I enjoyed the time spent at SHIP but there were a few things that I would've changed. Know that this is only my experience and most likely doesn't encompass anyone else in either the engine room or wheelhouse / missle rooms. Sometimes I felt like the program was moving far too fast for me to learn anything. In our final project I found myself at a loss of things to do simply because I simply didn't know how to do half the things everyone else was working on. I found myself having to look back on files worked on 2-3 weeks beforehand to re-learn some code that I needed currently. I don't know how it happened, but it feels like we only worked on HTML and CSS for a fraction of a class, but the skill ranges in the Engine room vary greatly. I feel like I know next to nothing about HTML, whilist someone sitting to my right is creating a website that would 'wow' web developers... This entire post sounds and feels very negative, but for the most part I really valued and enjoyed my time at SHIP. This was probably the first time I have ever been, what I would consider, bullied. Lunchtime was not enjoyable.

  39. In our treacherous journey, many lives were lost. The lives of bugs in a python code. Friendships were made, friendships were destroyed, and then made again. But through all the git pushes, one thing prevailed. A working code. In our long sail on this big SHIP, we all learned a lot, both physically and mentally. Physically, we learned that we aren't very athletic. The most athletic thing we did was play Frisbee while eating pizza. But mentally we learned so much more. If I had one word to describe SHIP, it would be a bad pun on sailing. But, if I wan't allowed to make a pun, that one word, would be "Learning."

  40. The SHIP journey has been interesting. I learned how to run the back-end of a website. Honestly, I thought that it was going to be more software-based, but I think it is good to know as much as you can in the CS universe. I think that I am going to take what I have learned here and apply it to future projects (I already have ideas!). It was a fun and productive way to spend the summer.

  41. I believe that SHIP not only made me better at coding, but also made it easier to work with others. By switching partners so often, I got used to working with new people. I am also less hesitant to ask for assistance because I know there are many people that are willing to help others. I think this was a very good experience and it will encourage me to take more coding classes in the future. Keep up the good work!

  42. My time at ship was good. I learned a lot and made many friends. I really don't know what else to write. I just want to express my appreciation towards the program itself and the people who run it.

  43. Adris Jaoutakas (Ignore profile name)

Over the last three and a half weeks, I have developed my skills as a programmer, thinker, manager and semi-innovator. I learned to work with others which is a skill difficult to come by on your own. Also I have made connections that might be of use later on in life. Hopefully, the projects that we have done and the experience that we have gained will in some way serve us later on. All in all, this program really was a blast, and was quite helpful.

  44. For the time I spent here at CTSUY, I can honestly say that I have grown in terms of my programming experience. My journey through CSTUY has been challenging, yet simple, long yet way too short and so much more (don't know how). In the beginning, you feel intimidated since you are about to take on one of those languages which is notorious for being difficult. Throughout the first two weeks, I got to the realization that processing (java) isn't really as insanely hard as I always thought it would be. The pizza Fridays were great and the buffets were awesome, but most of all, I think I really enjoyed the crazy groups and partnerships that ended up producing our (amazing) game.By the end of the last programming day, I was able to meet amazing people and write cool programs in a really nice place.

  45. Originally, I came here because my parents wanted me to. When I realized that coding meant that I could create things entirely on my own, I began to enjoy it more. I enjoyed being able to create programs. However, I always found it frustrating when something didn't work and I couldn't figure out why.
